The Buckthorn Project has been testing non-toxic chemical control for the past several years. The testing is mainly on treating stumps when buckthorn is cut down. Some of the formulations used have been successful in stopping new growth on the plants after being cut down. The testing was performed on a small sample area and in the summer growing cycle. The testing will need to be performed on spring and fall growing cycle, also for an extended length of time. The Buckthorn Project has started researching injecting test formulations into large mature plants.
1. Project Title:
Bio-herbicide test and research areas #1, #2 Save the Oaks, #3 Buckthorn 10 to 20 years old, #4 and #5 Save the Wildflowers.
2. Project Summary:
In the five projects listed above the Organization’s goals are to cut down the Buckthorn and treat the stumps with a bio-herbicide. The project areas will be trimmed with a brush cutter monthly from July through September to prevent new Buckthorn plants from sprouting.
The sites will be monitored for 3 years, and expectations are to have 90% or higher control within the two years of treating the buckthorn.
